Research Study Published in Journal of General Psychology
Contact Angie Niehoff (May 13, 2002) - Research shows that IM-Powered Training, a computer-powered timing technology, can improve golf shot accuracy by 20% or more. In an independent study conducted at Central Michigan University and published in The Journal of General Psychology (2002, 129(1), 77-96) golfers who completed the IM-Powered Training program significantly improved their shot accuracy across all clubs tested over a control group. The IM-Powered program requires a trainee to focus on a targeted outcome, rapidly process feedback, and make precise adjustments to movements, which is the same series of mental processes required during every golf swing. The gap between the targeted outcome (matching a fixed beat), and the trainee's actual performance is objectively measured in milliseconds. Trainees use patented auditory guidance during thousands of repeated movements to systematically lower their millisecond "score" and in turn improve their ability to focus, rapidly process feedback, and execute movements with precision, which results in more accurate golf shots. (see www.IM-Powered.com) The research study used a 60 shot pre/post test with participants hitting 15 golf balls with four clubs of progressive length (9 iron, 7 iron, 5 iron and driver) in a golf course simulator. Distance to pin or accuracy data was analyzed for all four clubs and the overall test. "If training in timing improves performance by fine-tuning the timing components of a motor movement, then this type of training may be used to improve performance in other activities that require precise timing," concluded Terry M. Libkuman, lead author of the study, Department of Psychology, Central Michigan University. An additional view of the data, not discussed in the published report, shows that advanced golfers with lower handicaps improved golf shot accuracy by up to 35%, indicating that a player with consistent swing mechanics may achieve even greater benefit from IM-Powered training. "Mechanical instruction is important; but a person's core ability to focus on a task and synchronize their movements is fundamental to the swing. We have not had a reliable, effective tool for this type of mental training," says Phillip Truono, a Master Instructor at the Jim McLean Golf Academy in Weston, FL. Truono, one of the first golf instructors in the country trained to offer IM-Powered Training to clients, credits the technology for improving his own game. "I'm more focused, more accurate and more consistent throughout the game. It can really make a difference, especially for the serious golfer looking to reach a single digit handicap." IM-Powered Training utilizes the Interactive Metronome® (IM), a patented, interactive training technology based on the traditional metronome concept that was developed over a decade ago. In addition to use for athletic and academic performance by top schools, universities, and professional organizations, a network of hundreds of hospitals and clinics use the IM for a range of cognitive deficits in children and adults.
